Denby Pottery Company Ltd is a British manufacturer of pottery , named after the village of Denby in Derbyshire where it is based. It primarily sells hand-crafted stoneware tableware , kitchenware and serveware products including dinner sets, mugs and serving dishes, as well as a variety of glassware products and cast-iron cookware.
The pottery at Denby was founded on the estate of William Drury-Lowe in as a manufacturer of stoneware bottles. Bourne later took over the Codnor Park and Shipley Potteries, and merged them into the Denby works in a similar manner. Joseph Bourne took his son Joseph Harvey Bourne into partnership, and the company became known as Joseph Bourne and Son, a name it kept even after the death of Joseph Bourne in Using a new patent process for drying slip invented by Needham and Kite of Vauxhall, the pottery produced at least 25 tons of workable clay each day.
In the nineteenth century most of the ware produced was salt-glazed stoneware. Bourne patented improved kilns for stoneware in and They also made more decorative “hunting jugs” sprigged with moulded decorations of huntsmen, windmills, men smoking or beehives, sometimes with the handle in the form of a greyhound, and terracotta goods, both practical and decorative. The company benefited greatly from its transport links into Derby and beyond, particularly when the Midland Railway opened its Ripley Branch.
It had a siding at Denby Wharf the terminus of the Little Eaton Gangway approximately opposite to the factory. Each week around three or four vans would be dispatched to Chaddesden sidings near Derby station where they would be connected to an express to St Pancras in London and the company’s warehouse at the Granary. The company, whose name is now principally associated with stoneware , initially produced bottles and jars, before specialising in kitchenware and, eventually, in tableware, for which it is best known today.
In order to increase capacity the nearby Langley Mill Pottery was acquired in October
Went here mainly for the food shopping, great local products and produce. We had a good good look around the one shop that’s open after the lockdown, the 31st July. We went Saw JM’s cookery demonstration then did a factory visit, very educational didn’t know the clay used came from Chesterfield? We made a model Frog and painted a plate for our Granddaughter. Very enjoyable day out.

Denby Arabesque Samarkand
Our history begins in , when a seam of clay was found at Denby during the construction of a road to link the industrial towns of Derbyshire. William Bourne, a local entrepreneur, examined the clay and recognised its exceptional qualities. Production of salt-glazed pottery started at Denby in from a number of small buildings on the site of the clay bed. William Bourne gave the onerous task of running the business to his youngest son, Joseph. Known as ‘Joseph Bourne’ the pottery prospered and soon built up an international reputation for its quality bottles and jars.
As glass was very expensive in the early 19th century these stoneware bottles were essential for holding commodities like preserves, pickles, ink, polish, mineral water, medicines and even ginger beer.
Launching July in our Denbystore, Studio Grey combines urban with artisan in This quality stoneware collection, which are made in Derbyshire England.

This web site, giving details of British Stoneware Hunting Jugs, is continually being updated. Please visit the site again. Select any of the above links to view a stoneware related topic. This site is devoted to the stoneware hunting jugs also called Toby Jugs in Royal Doulton catalogues. The information is largely from observation of jugs in my personal possession or seen elsewhere. Makers names very rarely appear on early jugs and only intermittently during the second half of the 19th century with the exception of Doulton, which seems to have marked most of its later production.
Even the common twentieth century jugs from Bourne of Denby are rarely marked with that name. The intention is to try to identify the products of individual factories from common features and characteristics. I am doing it as a web site to enable me to best organise my ideas. If you have any comments feel free to contact me at phil brownjugs. If you have a collection of jugs I would be very interested to have details because there are lots of variations out there.
I will, for the time being concentrate on 19th and 20th century jugs as the early ones have been better covered in books and they are very expensive nowadays! This site is hosted by mernicks.

Success Story: Denby
Denby is one of the last large-scale potteries left in England, having started in when a rich seam of clay was discovered in Derbyshire. That seam is still mined today and its iron-rich structure together with the glazing process used is what gives Denby ceramics their durability. Elsewhere, agents and distributors work in partnership with the company to present the products in the best way for each local market.
Denby is proud to be British and the quality of manufacture, design and product durability is highly regarded in many overseas markets, especially in the Far East. All the stoneware products are made in the UK and then shipped abroad. Through being an international company for decades, Brexit has had no impact to date.
Making great food look beautiful has always been one of Denby’s core online: “To date our reopening has been a success story, improvin.
Denby can be safely used for cooking food in a microwave it is not recommended that the microwave is used for warming plates , oven and for use in the fridge, freezer and dishwasher. Denby recommends using liquid detergents in your dishwasher. All pottery and china can crack if exposed to sudden changes in temperature, no matter how strong it is, so please don’t take items from the freezer and put them straight into the oven or microwave, or expose to direct heat sources such as the burner or grill.
Denby stoneware is a handmade product and therefore could result in color variations from piece to piece. Color variations sometimes occur naturally during manufacture and are part of the intrinsic beauty of our unique line. Please also keep in mind, since computer screens vary, the actual glaze colors may differ from those on your screen. This is a common issue that is actually related to the flatware you are using and affects mostly white or light faced plates which tend to show metal marks rather than actual scratches.
The flatware being used is softer than the glaze on the dishes. Denby glazes are extremely hard and over time some of the metal actually gets left behind on the plate. This will occur depending on the nickel content of the flatware. Denby glass is designed by the team at Denby and then handmade and mouthblown for us by renowned glass factories.
The color in Denby glass is created by rolling clear glass in colored chips and melting them so that they fuse.
